THE THIRD ANNUAL VISION FESTIVAL

MAY 18 - 25, 1998
at the Orensanz Art Center - 172 Norfolk St (near Ave. A and Houston), NYC.

8 nights this year! A jazz festival focused on the ecstatic adventure in jazz like no other in the world. The Third Annual VISION FESTIVAL is presented by ARTS FOR ART The Vision Festival presents art on the terms that uphold and expand the concepts of each musician, dancer, painter, and poet--those who have died and laid down the tracks and those who are still creating. A masterpiece is an ongoing project that lasts a lifetime. Art must be presented, it must be seen and heard. It is for the enrichment of all those who attend and those who do not. It is about lights shining and not being buried. It is ultimately about the greatest art, that's, living.

MONDAY MAY 25: A TRIBUTE TO JIMMY LYONS

The shape of jazz would not be the same without Jimmy Lyons, the alto saxophonist whose intellect and passion was at the core of the revolutionary music of the avant-garde. He was born on December 31, 1931. He began in 1961 25 uninterrupted years of collaboration with Cecil Taylor. However efficient and successful this collaboration was, it led a large audience to appreciate him as a sideman only, neglecting the individual Afro-American music that was his own. He died an untimely death on May 19, 1986.

This year, the Vision Festival will present a Tribute to Jimmy Lyons on our final night, Monday May 25. Featured on this program are players who worked very closely with Jimmy during his time here. The evening will close with a special Jimmy Lyons Memorial Big Band performance of his composition, "Something Is The Matter."

7:00 pm Poet: STEVE CANNON
7:45 pm ANDREW CYRILLE SOLO
8:30 pm KAREN BORCA QUARTET / TRIO * Rob Brown * Susie Ibarra 8 William Parker * Paul Murphy
* Karen will be playing in quartet with Rob, Susie and William; there will also be a special trio piece with William and Paul, as these three worked with Jimmy as a group.
9:30 pm RAPHE MALIK - Glenn Spearman * William Parker *Paul Murphy * Jere Carroll
10:30 pm JIMMY LYONS BIG BAND * Karen Borca * Arthur Brooks * Rob Brown *Roy Cambell * Will Connell * Marco Eneidi * John Hagen * Jeff Hoyer * Jackson Krall * Glynis Lomon * Sabir Mateen * William Parker * Lisa Sokolov

William Parker

David S. Ware performing with his quartet, with Matthew Shipp - piano, William Parker - bass, and Susie Ibarra - drums.

The Vision Festival was held in New York from May 27th to June 1st. Bassist William Parker led his powerful Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra and anchored various other ensembles at the six days of progressive music, dance, poetry, visual art, and master classes. This ambitious event was presented by Arts For Art, which included Parker and his wife, dancer Patricia Nicholson, as prominent organizers.

The line-up was a list of the most creative and progressive artists available, and included Joseph Jarman; Milford Graves; David S. Ware Quartet; Trio Hurricane with Glenn Spearman, Paul Murphy & William Parker; Reggie Workman; John Zorn; Thurston Moore; Joe Maneri; Susie Ibarra; Charles Gayle; Rashied Ali; Ivo Perelman; Mark Dresser; Medeski, Martin & Wood; Lou Grassi; Burton Greene; Perry Robinson; Butch Morris; Matthew Shipp; Daniel Berrigan; Amiri Baraka; and many others.

The festival did not draw the size audience befitting the array of talented creative artists presented. I know there are many potential listeners who would be very pleased to hear these artists. Tell your friends, and let's all get out to the festival in 1998.
